What is Silicon Valley Gives?
Silicon Valley Community Foundation will host the first-ever day of giving to benefit every nonprofit organization in our region, an event aimed at inspiring and uniting our local community to support philanthropic causes. On Tuesday, May 6, 2014, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of community foundations, SVCF will raise money for local nonprofits through a single online donation platform, providing a great way to connect donors to the charitable causes they care about most and encourage them to take action. This event will provide an opportunity for donors of all different capacities to be involved and will provide invaluable trainings to a broad range of nonprofit organizations.
Why is Silicon Valley Community Foundation sponsoring this event?
One of the pillars of SVCF’s mission is to strengthen the common good locally. This 24-hour online fundraising effort will give SVCF the opportunity to raise millions of dollars for thousands of nonprofits – and make a difference to people’s lives here in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.
When will it take place?
During a 24-hour period starting at 12 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2014.
Who can participate in Silicon Valley Gives?
Any individual may donate. Donations through Silicon Valley Gives to nonprofit organizations are tax- deductible and irrevocable (donations will not be refunded). Contributions may be made via credit and debit card only. Donations will be received and receipted by Razoo Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity.
Which nonprofit organizations can participate in Silicon Valley Gives?
Eligible nonprofits must be 501(c)(3) organizations that are either based in San Mateo or Santa Clara counties. Exceptions will be evaluated for 501(c)(3) organizations based in the Bay Area that serve significant populations in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
95.1% of your donation will be disbursed to nonprofits participating in Silicon Valley Gives. All donations made on Silicon Valley Gives website on svgives.razoo.com are made to the Razoo Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that permits donors to advise a regranting of their donations to qualified charitable organizations. All donations are final and cannot be refunded. It is Razoo Foundations normal practice to regrant 95.1% of its contribution to the qualifying organization as advised by the donor, retaining 4.9% for Razoo Foundation’s expenses (including credit card transaction costs). 100% of your online charitable gift is receipted as a charitable contribution to Razoo Foundation, advised for regrant to your chosen charity.
Who is Razoo?
Razoo is crowdfunding for causes. Named for an Australian coin of little value on its own, until combined with many, Razoo powers small acts of giving that together change the world. From multimillion-dollar, community-led Giving Days to individuals collecting donations on behalf of the nonprofits or personal causes they support.
Who will receive my contact information?
The organization(s) you choose to support will receive donor name and contact information, unless the donor chooses to make an anonymous contribution. As host of Silicon Valley Gives, Silicon Valley Community Foundation will receive contact information for donors who participate in Silicon Valley Gives and do not choose to give anonymously at the time of their donation. This information is used solely to thank the donor for participating, provide the option to opt-in to receiving future notifications from Silicon Valley Community Foundation and to notify the donor of future Silicon Valley Gives activities.
Do donors need to have an account with Razoo to donate?
No, donors do not need to create an account to make a donation. However, if they plan to give multiple times creating an account means they only have to enter their credit card information once. Their donor account also collects their tax receipts in one location, enables them to track their donations, review the charities they support, and schedule future giving. Their tax receipt is e-mailed to them immediately by Razoo Foundation upon successful processing of their donation. To claim a donation as a deduction on their U.S. taxes, they should retain their email donation receipt as an official record.
Can Donors make a donation on Silicon Valley Gives to an organization from their mobile device?
Yes. Silicon Valley Gives mobile facilitates quick, easy and secure donations on all web-enabled mobile devices and is a great tool for donors and nonprofits during May 6, 2014 for giving on the go! Simply visit svgives.razoo.com on any web-enabled mobile device to make a donation or learn about a nonprofit or school.
How do I pre-schedule my donation for SVGives Day?
In the weeks leading up to SVGives Day this year, donors will be able to pre-schedule a donation for SVGives' 24 hour event on May 6th, 2014. This means a donor will need to create a user account in order for Razoo to securely save the card information to be processed on May 6th, 2014.On May 6th, 2014 all scheduled donations will be processed and a user's card charged with the donation transaction information previously saved. The user will receive a confirmation tax deductible receipt when the donation transaction is complete. A user can also check the status of a scheduled donation in their user account under the "My donations" tab. Below are the directions to schedule a donation before May 6th, 2014:
- Go to svgives.razoo.com
- Select "Schedule My Donation" on the homepage
- Search for the nonprofit you wish to donate to (up to 5 donations at a time)
- Select the green "Donate Now" option on an organization page
- Create a user account as prompted*
- "Complete" your donation
- Receive confirmation email outlining the details of your pre-scheduled donation
*In order to schedule a donation a donor MUST save their card information and create a user account for the Razoo system to securely store the card information as "pending" until the event day. If a donor does not want card information stored he/she must wait until May 6th, 2014 to make a live donation in order for the donation to count towards the event day prizes and totals.
What if my nonprofit is not on the Razoo website – how does it get listed?
The database of nonprofits on Razoo.com includes all legally registered 501(c)(3) organizations listed in the IRS Business Master File, excluding private non-operating foundations. If your organization is a registered 501(c)(3) and not in the database, claim your organization here.
In order for your organization show up in the SVGives event search results you must register it here.
How will donations made on May 6, 2014 be distributed?
Each donation made to a nonprofit organization will be disbursed directly from the Razoo Foundation. Donations to each nonprofit are batched by month and disbursed via check, or nonprofits can sign up for electronic funds transfer here: razoo.com/eft.
